The difference between chairs and stools as perceived by most people lies in the sitting position and the sitting comfort. Strictly speaking it would mean this: A stool is hard and for sitting upright at a table, whereas a chair is upholstered and for relaxing. But between the extremes of this simplified definition there is a whole range of stools that have adopted the comfort and relaxation functions of a chair.
