Orientation & Identity

The still young discipline of signage offers an exciting view of two and three dimensional design. This is the space in which visual and spatial designers meet and create interdis ciplinary collaborations to develop their projects. These projects give individual places their specific character, make orientation easier and give us a structured overview of the respective contents.

The 17 different projects discussed in this book show the potential this new field harbors for clients, urban planners, entrepreneurs and politicians. The individual designers’ backgrounds are as different as the backgrounds of the various clients in the fields of business, culture and healthcare. Artists, logistics experts and classical communi-
cation designers as well as architects share their views here. All of them ex‑ plain the aim of their projects, give the reader an insight into their multi-faceted design approaches and offer us a glimpse behind the scenes.
The introductory contributions on design theory, the representative selection of projects and the detailed glossary make this publication a comprehensive signage workbook for designers and clients. We wanted to create a volume that would go beyond a mere textbook and help the reader focus on new developments and provide a basis for more innovative projects in the future. We look forward to those projects.
