There are very few manufacturing companies still in existence that can reflect on a history spanning three hundred years. The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten is one of them.

As far back as the Rococo period, the Manufactory was supplying high society with elegant porcelain tableware and figurines. And just as its name suggests, the Porcelain Manufactory in Augarten Castle continues to focus on hand-crafted work produced by highly-skilled craftsmen such as colour painters, figure painters and edgers. That applies throughout the entire process – from preparing the raw material to the finished piece. When Marco Dessi first visited the Porcelain Manufactory, he was so enthused by the craftsmanship he saw here that, rather than simply utilising the production processes for his PASSIONSWEGE project, he decided to make them a key theme.

To do so, the designer from South Tyrol undertook three projects which take an experimental and creative look at the process of porcelain manufacturing. In the first project, the traditional casting process was modified to produce objects that – quite literally – introduce a new angle. In the second project, Dessi focused on the forms that are discarded as waste during the manufacturing process and transformed them into design elements. The third project made simple plates into a completely new functional object.
