PureAustrianDesign Awarded “5 Faces of 2009”

The “Face of the Year Award” prizes and celebrates five personalities who stand behind the term Austrian Design-Landscape. The stories of each one of those five faces cover the key elements of Design in Austria. Together, as an ensemble, they tell the bigger story of Austrian Design, and its possible future icons. To deliberate, the jury met in Vienna, at the office of the Viennese Tourism Board next to the Augarten Park, where they engaged in a prolonged and constructive discussion process. Finally, and after an overall consensus was reached, the five “Face of the Year” awards were announced.

Kenji Kawasaki is the director of 100% Design Tokyo and chairman of the Design Association in Japan. In the interview with spotonwien.com he is discussing the cultural value of 100% Design Tokyo, the design market in Asia and the interest of Japanese people in big design brands as well as the small design studio from around the corner.

Hippo Water Roller

In many countries, traditional water collection involves carrying a 5-gallon (20-liter) bucket on the head. This practice puts a great burden on the body and can damage the spine, neck and knees over time. A full Hippo Water Roller only feels like 22 pounds (10 kg) when rolled over level ground, making it possible for almost anyone to transport 24 gallons (90 liters) of water in much less time and with greater ease.

Dieter Rams, Designer - Cold War Modern

50 years ago, record players didn't look like machines. They looked like old-fashioned, brown wood furniture. But in 1956, Dieter Rams's SK4 record player, nicknamed Snow White's Coffin, changed all that.

Ron Arad's Rotator

Rotator is a hydraulic interior which was developed for the Italian manufacturer Teuco. The concept of a shower / bath tub / bathroom seems to be completely redefined using a bath that spins to empty and becomes a shower. A central part of the area is a hemispherical device which is anchored in the wall and allows the shower to be turned into a bathtub. The water is drained from the bath by rotating it back to the shower position. Two function in a design.
