New Wombats City Hostel Opened at Vienna's Naschmarkt With Colourful Interior Design by LUCY.D
On March 1, 2011, a new Wombats City Hostel opened at Vienna's Naschmarkt. The building retained its historic exterior facade, while extended by two stories and an attic to create space for 123 rooms with 460 beds. The City Hostel called "The Naschmarkt" is the third work of Vienna-based design studio LUCY.D for the Wombats City Hostel Holding GmbH. DUNE Furniture Launched in the Viennese Forest
As closing event of the Vienna Design Week on October 10th, the internationally awarded outdoor furniture DUNE was officially launched in the Verdarium showroom in Weidling near Vienna. Surrounded by a colourful, autumnal Viennese forest, the Verdarium proved to be an amazing stage to exhibit the prototypes of DUNE. Sketches and models complemented the prototypes to explain the developing process of this modular outdoor seating. Stefan Sagmeister's Custom-designed Lounge Chair
NY-based Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister presented a chair with 230 patterns at Basel's design fair Design Miami/Basel last week. Called Darwin Chair, this lounge chair is covered with more than sheets of paper each with a different printed pattern. The chair is produced by Grenswerk from The Netherlands.
The Darwin Chair is a custom-designed, free-swinging, stainless steel structure featuring 230 sheets of printed sheets as its “cushion”. If a user wishes to change the chair’s design, he simply removes the top sheet from the chair to reveal a new pattern. As more and more sheets are torn off, the perforation forms a comfortable headrest.
All of the sheets are printed with intricate patterns representing the creation of the universe and making their way through the creation of the world, the beginning of plant, animal and human life all the way to the digital revolution.
In an interview with Hewlett Packard (HP) Stefan Sagmeister revealed: “I was renovating my studio in New York. I looked at some furniture and found that all the furniture that I really liked I couldn’t afford and what I could afford I didn’t really like.
So I thought, oh, I’ll just design my own furniture. I also knew that coming from graphic design I wanted to make the chairs or the furniture quite graphic. I thought it would be a neat thing… to have a piece of furniture that changes, that could change color, texture, or pattern. Just rip off a sheet and have a new chair!”

For 4 months 24 works by Austrian designers, placed in and on air-filled bubbles, will create a fantastic design landscape. About a year ago the Viennese industrial designer Adam Wehsely-Swiczinsky met the Vienna-based horn manufacturer Thomas Petz for the first time to develop a joint work for the Vienna Design Week 2009. The fertile cooperation led to the first prototype of “Watussi Hornuhr”. This oddity made of south-african Watusi horn was presented during last year's Vienna Design Week. On Thursday, December 3, around 500 guests crowded the hall of Designforum in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier to attend the opening of the "GD2D+PD3D, Fresh AIR* by PureAustrianDesign" exhibition. A lot of prominence from the fields of culture, politics and economy as well as the domestic design scene which was also well represented. Both guests and organizers were enthusiastic about the exhibited design work and the presentation form in large air-filled cylinders. New X-mas Lights for Vienna's Kärntner Straße
Since 27 November, 550,000 crystal lights are illuminating Kärntner Strasse in downtown Vienna this year. Vienna-based designer Rainer Mutsch developed the glamorous lighting concept "Crystal Lights" together with Blachere Illumination, christmas lighting specialist from Wels (Upper Austria). On December 4, 2009, ”GD2D+PD3D, fresh air by PureAustrianDesign” will come home. The designforum based in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier will host the itinerant exhibition on Austrian graphic and product design for 3 months. With 24 works presented in and on individual air-filled bubbles, this particular show, curated and developed by JULAND *BarcelonaVienna in collaboration with guest curator for product design Stefan Moritsch (bkm design working group), will recreate a futuristic landscape which has previously been displayed in cities like Hong Kong, Milan, Bratislava, Aarhus and Nikosia. Austrian Design Awards go to GP designpartners and mischer'traxler from Vienna
22 October 2009: the Arena21 hall of Vienna's MuseumsQuartier was crowded to overflowing for the 38th award ceremony of the Austrian National Award for Design (Staatspreis Design). Three prestigious National Awards and a Promotion Prize for Experimental Design were waiting for the winners. Among the lucky three were two Viennese design studios who had already received the "5 Faces Of The Year" Award launched by "SPOT ON WIEN - Flashing Austrian Design and Music" a few months ago: GP designpartners with "Champ Solar Light“ and the studio mischer'traxler with its solar powered manufacturing plant "The Idea Of A Tree". Feichtner's “Linz Stool“ To Become a Democratized Cultural Asset of Design
As part of “Linz European Capital of Culture 2009“ the exhibition "Der Fall Design Forum (The Case Design Forum)" will open on 14 October in Landesgalerie in Linz, Upper Austria. In the person of this Austrian, New York based artist, the Raymond Loewy Foundation is honoring one of today’s most influential communications designers. Fresh Austrian Design Goes East & Far East
What have Hong Kong, China, and Nicosia, Cyprus, in common? They are port cities and they host the exhibition "GD2D+PD3D, fresh air by PureAustrianDesign“ at the same time. Hip Dispenser For Manner's Wafer Classic From Austria
Two years ago, Vienna and Milan based product designer Philipp Bruni presented the Manner SCHNITT-O-MAT as a prototype during "Blickfang" design fair in Vienna's MAK. Two years later this special Manner-wafer-dispenser is done - just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
In close cooperation with Vienna-based wafer manufacturers Manner, the stylish machine for the famous "Original Manner Neapolitan Wafers" has been introduced as a serial product.

New Ars Electronica Center Starts With Robot Orchestra, Big Eye and Lots of Light
On January 2, 2009 at 11 AM, exactly 35 hours after the kick-off of Linz as one of Europe's Cultural Capitals, the gates of the new Ars Electronica Center will open by switching on the lucent glass facade which surrounds the whole building. Several Awards For Industrial Design Class From Vienna's University of Applied Arts
At the first edition of the "Createch ideas competition" organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Traffic, Innovation and Technology, the Industrial Design Class 2 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna finished first in three out of five categories. The competition called for creative solutions in the field of transportation of both passengers and goods. On Saturday afternoon the bulthaup studio, showroom of the renowned kitchen producer next to Vienna's Opera, was cram-full, a fact that could not really be put down to the damp and windy autumn weather, but to the presentation of a new drinking set by Lobmeyr. „Wiener gemischter Satz“ is the cryptic name of the six-part set designed by Marie Rahm and Monica Singer from Polka, and subjected to a multiple drinking test by the visitors that very afternoon. On Thursday evening, the opening of the 2nd edition of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK attracted over 1,000 invited guests to party far into the night with music and drinks in the hall of Liechtenstein Palace. The crowded night was hosted by Neigungsgruppe Design, organizers of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK nad the lifestyle magazine H.O.M.E.. As prelude of the evening, the installation VERTICAL TAKE OFF AND LANDING by german-swedish design duo Kram/Weisshaar was unveiled in the courtyard of Palais Liechtenstein. Much fresh air is to be expected, in the form of a fresh gust of design wind from Austria. GD2D+PD3D, fresh air by PureAustrianDesign is a itinerant exhibition that brings along outstanding, extraordinary and unusual works of contemporary graphic and product design from Austria.
