Gold, Silver And Bronze For Austrian Graphic Designers At European Design Awards 2009
The European Design Awards, which took place for the third time in Zurich in May 2009, were given for works in the fields of graphic and web design. A total of 16 Austrian award winners was chosen out of more than 950 Europe-wide submissions by an international twelve-man jury. The members of the ED-Awards jury are not designers but editors of leading design publications.
The awards were given in a total of 30 categories, subdivided in seven main categories - General, Identity, Publications, Digital, Packaging, Illustration, Self-promotion and Various. Moreover, a "Jury's Prize“ was awarded to the Czech Agency Suitcase Type Foundry for the project "Comenia - School Typeface System". This year's Lifetime Award went to the renowned Swiss typographer Adrian Frutiger.
This year's call was followed by 379 designers from 28 European countries. Austria's creatives showed a particularly strong interest in this international contention and in presenting and promoting their projects beyond national borders. While there was only a slight increase in submissions compared to the previous year in Europe, the number of projects from Austria more than doubled to a total of 47 submitted works.
The Austrian Prize Winners
During this year's ED Awards a total of 16 local design studios was awarded, including one gold, six silver and nine bronze awards. Proud winner of a golden trophy is bauer concept & design GmbH, which made their point with the project "Mumok restaurant placemats for the customer MUMOK Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig“ in the category "Miscellaneous printed". STRUKTIV e.U. - Office for advertising art together with the bauer concept & design GmbH received a silver award for the publication "Orientation & Identity - Portraits of International Guidance Systems" submitted in the category "Book Layout“.
In the category "Magazine" two silver trophies went to Austria, fittingly to wortwerk agency for the "Silver Magazine" of the Vienna-based internet provider Silver Server. The second silver was given to the agency Circus for the Tirolean magazine "Quart Heft für Kultur". Austrians also showed up in the category of „Packaging“. Silver went even twice to Buchegger, Denoth, Feichtner / Haslinger, Keck. Their original packaging and branding solutions for Linz 09 Cultural Capital of Europe convinced the jury in the categories "Packaging Alcoholic drinks" and "Packaging Food & beverages".
Successful Vorarlberg-based agency sägenvier Designkommunikation run by Sigi Ramos was successful as well. The work "Holocaust - Naftali Fürst“ for the project „erinnern.at - National Socialism and the Holocaust: Memory and Present" was awarded silver in the category "Product Brochure & Catalog".
