Design Studio For Use Presents New Products at Milan's Salone del Mobile
by JULAND BarcelonaViennaIn the framework of this year's edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Vienna and Zagreb based design studio For Use is presenting a number of new products ranging from seating furniture to lighting. The light object series under the label „Numen“ is to be seen at Milan's Zona Tortona from 15 to 21 April 2008.
Numen Light Objects Presented at Zona Tortona
What exactly are Numen Objects? These mostly cubic light objects are structures made out of two-way mirrors and light, providing theoretically infinite reflections. Utilizing „spy glass“, also known as „see through mirror“, the viewer can see the infinity from outside.
This material, mostly used for peep shows and line-ups in police stations, has a characteristic that when seen from the illuminated side acts like a mirror, but when seen from the dark side, it is as transparent as the normal glass. The inner space is defined with luminous stripes positioned along all the inner edges of the objects, resulting in an illusion of endless light grid. The small dimensions of an object enhance the feeling of immense depth.
The research began in an unfinished project for the St. Etienne Biennial that was meant to present the idea of the grid as formal principle. Then came a radical experiment for the set design for Dante’s Inferno as directed by Tomaž Pandur. Subsequently, the project went on into the development of lighting units. In the version of today, we can appreciate a series of objects that have derived from an investigative and analytical as well as a rational approach to design.
In the recent months for use made further intensive experiments with spy mirrors and luminous stripes positioned along all the inner edges of a body resulting in various light objects. Different shapes and motions result in patterns and deformations of endless, light induced, virtual spaces.
From 15 to 21 April, the Numen-Light objects will be presented at Zona Tortona 34, 01 Superstudio, Studio 5, Via Forcella 13, Milano.
Further New Products at The Salone del Mobile
Interesting, new furniture from For Use can be seen at Milan Furniture Fair. Under the slogan "No X without a Y" this bustling studio presents the X and the Y chair. Also on show is the satyr chair - this time with armrests. 
X Chair, an Upholstered Chair
The profile of the chair is characterized by two mirrored and rotated triangles, providing the biggest thickness of the foam at the back of the seat and at the lumbar area of the backrest. So the big volumes of foam are placed at the areas where it is needed to give a good sitting comfort. The inner construction is made of single-axial bent plywood shell at two points where the volumes of the cushions end. Shell and glued foam are fully upholstered, resulting in a single pulsating form. Legs are made of transparent lacquered solid wood or lacquered tubular steel.

Y Chair, Wooden Chair With Armrests
The wooden structure of variable transactions with armrests reminds on a traditional typology. The diagonal bars inside the frames of the armrests improve the statics of the construction, resulting in the idiosyncratic Y forms at the rear side. The main wooden bars have a torsion, resulting in a smooth and light construction made of varnished solid beech or oak wood. The cushion is made of foam covered and upholstered moulded plywood shell.

Two similar triangle profiles of the seat and the backrest are rotated at 90°, resulting in biggest thickness at the back of the seat and the top of the backrest, the areas of highest pressure during seating.

For Use was created 1998 and has been running offices in Vienna and Zagreb since then, carrying out products in co-operation with internationally renowned companies from the furniture industry. Among their customers rank Cappellini, ClassiCon, Desalto, interLuebke, MDF Italia, Moroso and Zanotta. In the last years they have realized projects under the label Numen within the areas of interior and exhibition design as well as scenery.
