PureAustrianGraphicDesign & CzechFriends - With pictures of the opening

PureAustrianGraphicDesign & CzechFriends landed in Rome with a Grand Opening on the 8th of October and can be visited until the 25th of October in the context of Roma Design +.

The exhibition presents outstanding Austrian and international graphic design: This time with graphic design of the Czech Republic, this time in Rome. Allegory for a future without borders and for graphic design, which has an unlimited future.

The exhibition gave an insight into the exciting work of Austrian graphic designers and featured the “Czech Grand Design” winners. This creative journey led through the worlds of logotypes, corporate identity and illustrations, as well as the fields of promotion, publishing and advertising.

Experience with 1.700 graphic design studios

PureAustrianGraphicDesign & Friends evolves from a selection based on the book series “Around Europe” composed by studio JULAND *BarcelonaVienna, published and distributed in more than 20 countries by Indexbooks. Since three years, the studio JULAND *BarcelonaVienna has been collaborating with more than 1,700 graphic design studios from all over Europe to create books with a high grade of quality and innovation in graphic design, ranging from Portugal to Iceland over Italy to the Netherlands and England. The book series is divided in different topics like logotypes, publishing, promotion, illustration and packaging; the selection criteria are based on the contribution of high-quality graphic work – from the vanguard to the classic. The idea is to show an ample repertoire that identifies a country.

18 Austrians and 8 Czechs

In this case Juland *BarcelonaVienna showed Austria and 18 design studios, a few very established and others very young, with projects including posters, illustrations, graffiti, packaging, typography, publishing, stickers and t-shirts. Austria as a country in Europe has prolific designers. Next to them, their friends, neighbouring countries or European brothers to be invited in order to foster the culture of design everywhere. This time we invited the ”Grand Czech Design” with a selection awarded in the Czech Republic.

Do design characteristics exist for each country?

It might be difficult to say but for trained eyes, accustomed to the international design, in fact there are differences between the design of the Netherlands and that of Portugal or between France and Germany, but it is not possible to generalize. The design market is very permeable and dynamic.

It is possible to do the exercise to divide it in two categories. This would make it easier: on the one hand, the commercial and popular design (based on a design clearly geared to bulk sale of products and/or services with moderate price margins which employs marketing in order to promote its designs) and on the other hand, one based on independence, freestyle, which can become economically successful or not, but which will have an impact as well as local and global acceptance on a cultural, innovative, venturous and unconventional level. This selection has all these characteristics, perhaps not so much the commercial ones but rather the cultural ones, and on an international level - by all means.
